Electrical Engineer

Background

When I left college in 1990 my first employment was as a trainee technician with a company that serviced and maintained arcade machines and music systems.  After a couple of years I moved to the Design Services department of Wakefield Metropolitan District Council as a trainee Electrical Engineer.  Once I had gained my B.Tech National Diploma in electrical engineering and become more experienced, I was promoted to the position of qualified electrical engineer.  When Wakefield Council formed a joint venture with NPS in 2004, I transferred over and I now work at the NPS office in Castleford.

What do you do?

I design electrical services installations for various types of building projects such as schools, offices, sports halls, leisure centres and housing schemes.  This includes producing electrical layout drawings, writing specifications for new schemes, carrying out feasibility studies, surveying existing installations and ensuring compliance with the latest legislations.

As a former member of the Ideas and Development Group I have travelled to different NPS offices around the country, exchanging ideas and strategies.  It helps us to work more efficiently by standardising procedures across the group and maximising our full potential.

Why NPS?

NPS believes that their staff are the main assets of the company, and offer their wholehearted support in all areas of the work environment.  Flexible working hours, a ‘no blame’ culture, and an organisation that is not afraid of change create a friendly working atmosphere.  It encourages all the different disciplines to interact both professionally and socially, to create a friendly work place.
