Mechanical Engineer

Background

I started my career at Wigan Council as a YTS trainee in building services in 1989.  I progressed through various grades to become a mechanical design engineer in 1998.  When Wigan Council formed a joint venture with NPS in 2004, I transferred over and subsequently moved to the NPS office at Waterside House in Wigan.

What do you do?

I am a mechanical design engineer within the building services design section. My job consists of producing specifications and detailed design drawings for heating, mechanical ventilation, air conditioning, hot and cold water and other building services.  The best thing about my job is working with all the people both in and out of the office.  It’s really varied — I could be working in the office one day and then the next on a building site, so it keeps me on my toes.  The personal protective equipment provided (e.g. hard hat, boots, hi-vis vests) is really glamorous!

Why NPS?

Working for NPS has opened up a wider scope of work that I can apply my skills to.  It means I can work on a real variety of projects from schools, offices, and housing to leisure centres, because NPS has grown into a large consulting practice which has the capacity to compete with other large established practices.
