The Waltham Forest Design Awards were established in 1990 to stimulate interest in architecture and urban design in the borough, and to recognise and reward quality design.
The winners of the 2009 Waltham Forest Design Awards were revealed on Tuesday 16th February 2010 at the William Morris Gallery, Walthamstow. NPS put forward 3 schemes: Thomas Gamuel foundation unit, Mission Grove Children's Centre, Newport Children's Centre for the category of ‘Best Educational Scheme’ and won with Newport Children’s Centre. Others in the category included the Frederick Bremer School and the Kelmscott School extension and refurbishment; both major BSF secondary school schemes.
The original layout of the Newport scheme was conceived by Dennis Harrington, and the project was then led by John Miller and Gary Allmand. Other NPS Group team members included:
- Quantity Surveyor - Stephen Brennan
- Structural Engineer - Joe Hau
- Mechanical Engineer - Ian Robinson
- Electrical Engineer - Tony O'Byrne
- Planning Supervisor - Elliss Sharpe
- Client Officer - Dean Musk
Councillor Terry Wheeler, cabinet member for enterprise and investment said: "I am pleased there were so many entries for this year’s Waltham Forest Design Awards scheme and that the council could recognise and reward quality architecture and urban design in the borough. I’d like to congratulate everyone who won an award and everyone who participated, and I hope that next year even more people will enter."
As there were no awards last year, nominations were accepted for projects throughout 2008 and 2009. NPS have now won this award two years running -the 2007 award being awarded for the Newport Link Block.
Judging began in November 2009; the judging panel included an elected member of the Council, a representative of the Waltham Forest Guardian newspaper, a representative from the Civic Society, and independent members of both the Royal Town Planning Institute and the Royal Institute of British Architects.
